Life in the Baixada Fluminense
Baixada Fluminense is the name of the sprawling suburban belt of Rio de Janeiro und has more inhabitants than the city itself. There are no exotic beaches to lure the tourists in the vast favelas and the anonymous high-rises of the Baixada. There is nothing appealing about this place, but yet it's home to the Brazilian way of life: In modest warehouses the true samba is performed, in impressive buildings Afro-American cults are celebrated and on the streets garbage collectors with their pull carts work for a living in dignity.
