Carnival of the garbage collectors
The Barrio Unido, situated in the outskirts of Montevideo, is made of rubbish. Rugged cloth and nailed tin sheets are the basis of the houses in this shantytown and the people literally live from the garbage: They work as garbage collectors and -recyclers. However, during carnival they organize their very own parade; with its fancy floats, beauty queens and drummers it greatly resembles its famous Brazilian counterparts. Of course all the costumes are made out of rubbish and ragged clothes.
